Clean Water Project in Indonesia (West Java)

Many of the countries we visit have problems getting water to the citizens during the dry season and clean water at anytime. Often the sources of the water are springs and streams that are a considerable distance from the villages. Residents spend a good part of their time carrying and boiling their water. One of the major initiatives the Humanitarian programs of the Church sponsor is clean water. We work with local NGO's that hire contractors to lay the pipe, build the tanks, and monitor the flow. Villages are encouraged to form water committees to install meters, collect money. and initiate a program that will maintain the water system once it is installed. Villagers assist with the construction of the lines so that the project is really theirs. Latter Day Saints Charities (LDSC) provides the funds from the contributions of LDS Church Members around the world

At present there are four different water projects in Indonesia. These pictures are of one project 4 hours SE of Jakarta and involve 5 villages with several thousand villagers. Water is now flowing into one of the villages with remarkable impact on the citizenry. The other four villages are hoping that the 12 km pipe that brings the water down hill from the source, across a river, and up the other side to a big reservoir will indeed work. They show some of the rain forest foilage and some of the terrain the water lines haveto go through. The pipe was buried, often in the midst of a rain storm.

Wow, as I sit here, our hot water has been turned off so the pipes can be moved and I have been grumbling about it! I guess I was prompted to look at your blog for a reason! How spoiled I am...I will be working on that for sure. Love the pictures of the girls dancing. Love you both and hope you are doing well. We will leave for Utah on Sat. afternoon for Grandma's funeral, our thoughts are with you as I am sure you feel so far away.
